DIVERSITY STATISTICS Did you know that ? 1 heterosexual white males make up 25% of the population but still hold 90% of the political, economic and cultural directorship seats. (Lester, 1994) 2 women still earn 30% less than their male counterparts. (Caudron, 1995) 3 of the 43 million Americans with disabilities, approximately 14.6 million are in the working-age group from 16 to 65. However, only 29% of this group are working, and close to 6 million of them could be employed with some effort to recruit and some accommodation. (Carnes, 1995) 4 oriental refers to objects from the orient and not to people who are from Asia. (Lester, 1994) 5 real estate agents discriminated against black applicants slightly over half the time, showing them fewer apartments, steering them to minority neighborhoods, etc. black applicants for mortgages with the same economic resources as similar white applicants were turned down for mortgages twice as often, at all income levels. (Douglas Massey, University of Chicago study, reported in Time Magazine, November 9, 1992) 6 it was believed by some that 10% of the population was homosexual and that considerably more were bisexual even back in 1953. (Mitchell, 1995) 8 white males make up 90% of the top corporate-leadership, 92% of state governors, 70% of tenured college faculty, 90% of daily newspaper editors and 77% of television news directors. (Ehrnreich, 1995; Blank & Slipp, 1994) 9 36% of black households are middle to upper middle income. (Blank & Slipp, 1994) 10 two million older workers between ages 50 and 64 are ready, willing and able to work and are not being utilized.(also), that within 25 years, one out of every four workers will be age 56 and older. (Blank & Slipp, 1994)
