DIVERSITY CONCEPTS

 

Contextual Prejudice refers to the individual and institutional network of prejudices or shared feelings about another group.

Discrimination occurs when we act on our prejudices when dealing with others.

Diversity is any dimension that can be used to differentiate groups and people from one another.

Ethnocentrism is the belief that your own cultural values and customs are superior to all others.

Feminism is the belief in and advocacy for the social, political, and economic equality of women.

Humanitarianism is the concern for human welfare especially as expressed through philanthropic activities and interest in social reforms.

Prejudice is a predetermined feeling or attitude people have about other people, places or things which is not based on factual data.

Racism is an attitude toward a person based on that person’s race rather than on objective knowledge of the person.

Selective Perception is a subconscious process of noticing a specific behavior by one group while discounting or not noticing that same behavior on the part of another group.

Sexism is an attitude toward a person based on that person’s gender rather than
on objective knowledge of the person.

Sexual Harassment is interference, intimidation, hostility, or offensive behavior on the part of one person toward another based at least in part on the gender of the persons.

Social Distance refers to the amount of space that operates between individuals or groups as a result of differences in race, age, culture, ethnicity, etc.

Stereotyping is an outgrowth of prejudice in which we label others based only on their membership in one group, and then label others who are like them in one characteristic as if they are similar in all characteristics.
